Hanscom Air Force Base Suicide Awareness “Glow Run”

The Glow Run, Ruck, and Walk 5K took place at Hanscom Air Force base in Bedford on September 20th. The goal was to honor Suicide Prevention Month and raise awareness of the resiliency resources available to the Hanscom community, including a mental health clinic. Our affiliate was delighted to be invited to be there to share information about NAMI programs and other local support opportunities.

There was a festive side to the gathering with military personal and family members connecting with one another and lighting up the night with every kind of glow stick, and glow in the dark face paint. The first women over the finish line for the 5K pushed a stroller with her daughter inside. There were also meaningful speeches about safe guarding he community’s mental health and a memorial to to a colleague who died by suicide. Attendees could pick up merchandise to help spread the word about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline where those associated with the military can access culturally sensitive confidential support by dialing 988 and pressing 1, or texting to 838255, or chatting online at veteranscrisisline.net.

The Hanscom Air Force Base Facebook page notes, “Events like these build camaraderie and remind us all that mental health matters. Let's continue to support one another and promote a resilient and connected force.” A wonderful sentiment for us all.
