Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing for Loved Ones (MILO) Clinic at Boston Medical Center

Boston Medical Center has officially opened a Motivational Interviewing for Loved Ones (MILO) clinic! It is an insurance-based program in which parents or caregivers can sign up to receive MI training for 4-5 sessions in-person or by telehealth. Motivational Interviewing (“MI”) is a communication style that health professionals use to talk with patients about making healthy changes like reducing drug and alcohol use, taking medications regularly, or other lifestyle improvements. MI is based on the premise that the best way to influence another person’s behavior is by respecting their autonomy and creating space for them to explore their own ambivalence and (hopefully) motivation for change. To get started, email the clinic at learnaboutmilo@bmc.org or call (401)206-0586.

NAMI Cambridge/Middlesex recently hosted a webinar on MILO. Emily Kline, a clinical psychologist at Boston Medical Center and assistant professor of psychiatry at the BU School of Medicine, spoke on Motivational Interviewing (MI). At the heart of her newly developed MILO curriculum is the understanding that how we communicate with a loved one can push them toward or away from change. This can improve all kinds of family relationships impacted by mental health, adolescence, or common daily conflicts. View Ms. Kline’s presentation in the button below.
