You can Impact the Youth Mental Health Crisis. Train to be a NAMI Basics Teacher. Re-scheduled to April 20-21.

American youth are in a mental health crisis. . . you can help! NAMI’s family education classes make a difference. Your personal journey parenting a child or adolescent with a mental health condition makes you a candidate for the rewarding experience of helping other families by teaching NAMI Basics.

The weekly, six session NAMI Basics course is exclusively for parents/caregivers of children and adolescents experiencing emotional or behavioral health challenges or who have already been diagnosed. The program provides critical strategies for taking care of your child and learning the essentials of resiliency and recovery. The course is primarily taught in the evening via Zoom during a time frame selected by the teachers.

A NAMI Basics teacher plays an important role in ensuring that all participants feel welcome and supported. Our teachers are uniquely qualified to lead a class because they too have parented a child with mental health challenges. They can empathize with and encourage caregivers who are just beginning or those enmeshed further in their journey.

The NAMI Basics Teacher training is designed for participants to learn and practice specific skills that will guarantee a meaningful and informative educational experience for all participants. After the training, certified teachers know how to deliver class content, how to encourage collective thought, and how to direct energy towards positive outcomes. Teachers make use of a class manual and facilitation skills to ensure participants experience a safe learning environment.

There is an in-person NAMI Basics Teacher Training re-scheduled for the weekend of April 20-21, 9:00–5:00, at the NAMI Massachusetts office in Woburn MA. Graduates of the training are matched with experienced leaders to form a teaching team for an upcoming session of the class. NAMI Massachusetts is now offering a stipend for each Basics class taught. Details about the training course and a downloadable application form are included in the buttons below. Hotel accommodations are available for trainees traveling long distance.

Any of our Basics trainers would be delighted to talk with you about the training or their experience teaching NAMI Basics.
